Cranie has enjoyed a fairly unique international career having featured in both England and Scotland squads but tied his future to the Three Lions in 2002\/3 by playing in their UEFA European Under 17s championship campaign.
He scored a header on his competitive debut against the Czech Republic in a qualifying round before helping England to the last four in the finals in Portugal where they eventually went out to the hosts on penalties.
He has gone on to play for the under 20 side in the world youth championships in Dubai and also captain the three lions at under 18 and 19 level.
At Saints, Martin made his debut for the reserves against Chelsea in 2002\/3 while he was still a schoolboy and his first senior start also came against the West London side. Sadly, a fine display was eclipsed by an unfortunate own goal.
A player for the big occasion he scored a vital goal in the Under 19s Premier League Academy play-off semi-final against Arsenal, heading home an injury time winner to book his team a place in the final where he turned in two assured performances against Sheffield United to help his side lift the Cup.
His progress continued at the start of the 2004\/5 season when he was on the bench for the home game against Blackburn and came on as a substitute in the Carling Cup victory over Northampton.
Since then his appearances have been sporadic with a brief run of games when George Burley first came in. But it was a difficult spell for the team and Cranie then found himself on the fringes of the squad for the rest of the 2005-06 campaign.
