Not always a first choice at his club, Olympique Lyonnais, François Clerc's qualities at right-back are nevertheless highly regarded by France head coach Raymond Domenech, who considers the 25-year-old to be the ideal understudy to Willy Sagnol.

Joined Lyon as a youth but unable to break into first team until a loan spell at Toulouse FC in 2004\/05.

Came to prominence in second half of following season with some outstanding displays for Lyon, notably in UEFA Champions League where he started all four knockout stage encounters against PSV Eindhoven and AC Milan.

Called up for March 2006 friendly v Slovakia after only 14 Ligue 1 appearances but did not play; went to 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Portugal, starting two matches.

Made senior debut in UEFA EURO 2008 qualifier against Faroe Islands in October 2006; started three other ties and won tenth cap in March 2008 friendly v England.

Completed hat-trick of Ligue 1 titles with Lyon in 2008.
