A direct runner from midfield, the incisive Uruguayan is capable of reaching the by-line and supplying his strikers with precise crosses. Alternatively, he is just as adept at cutting in from in the flank and going for goal himself.

Still only 24, Fernandez already has a wealth of experience behind him. A second division debutant with Club Atletico Atenas, he moved to Montevideo Wanderers in 2007 and then on to Puebla of Mexico a year later, where his game began to flourish.

2009 proved to be his breakthrough year. Leaving Puebla for Nacional in January, the youngster became a key contributor in the side that would reach the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores and win the Uruguayan league championship, scoring eight goals in all.

Oscar Tabarez named him in the Uruguay squad for the first time in March that year, selecting him for the crucial FIFA World Cup™ qualifier against Chile, a game that ended in a goalless draw.

His subsequent departure for Portugal’s Vitoria Setubal did not work out as planned, however. Enjoying little in the way of first-team opportunities with his club, his appearances for Uruguay became more infrequent, although Tabarez did hand him a starting place in the first leg of the South Africa 2010 play-off with Costa Rica.

Yet, since joining Universidad de Chile Fernandez has been playing regularly again, ensuring he remains in Tabarez’s thoughts as a useful option down the right wing.
