A right-sided player who can slot in at right-back or in midfield, Edgar Alvarez made a late charge for inclusion in the Honduras squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. Though not called upon on a regular basis during the final phase of the qualifying competition by Catracho coach Reinaldo Rueda, Alvarez enjoyed a fine season with Bari in Serie A, which thrusted him back into the limelight.

Alvarez has been a tried and trusted performer during his extensive club career, much of which he has spent overseas. Beginning with Club Deportivo Platense, it was not long before he decided to try his luck abroad, joining Uruguayan giants Penarol in 2003 and impressing for them in both the league and Copa Libertadores. Acting on the recommendation of David Suazo, a compatriot of Alvarez’s, Cagliari then lured him to Italy.

After earning a regular starting slot with the Sicilians, Roma came in for him in 2005, though he found first-team opportunities hard to come by in the Italian capital and was loaned out on several occasions. Bari came to the rescue in 2009, with Alvarez showing his appreciation by rediscovering his very best form for the southerners, which did not go unnoticed by Rueda.

Though an international since 2001, Alvarez had not featured much under the Colombian coach, but earned a recall to La Bicolor for a friendly against Turkey this March, just in time for him to stake his claim for a ticket to South Africa.
","37FE64B882E92ECB":"Edgard Anthony Alvarez Reyes","584B722087373EED7A432DDE0763CE35":"1","D91FA56861637784":"Platense","1CD1A53514962B6A":"1
;
