Two years in south-west Italy were followed by three seasons in the north-east with Udinese Calcio, where he made his European club competition debut in the UEFA Cup.

Just one cap before making two substitute appearances at UEFA EURO 2000.

Regular left-back at UEFA EURO 2004 (four appearances) and 2006 FIFA World Cup (three).

Scored in his final two UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying appearances, against San Marino (3-0) and Republic of Ireland (1-0), bringing his international goal tally to ten.

Started all seven knockout fixtures in Milan's UEFA Champions League triumph, including final, and scored a spectacular volleyed winner in the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla FC (3-1).
