National team
Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni handed him a debut against Japan in November 2001. This followed some impressive displays for the Italian Under-21 side that won the UEFA European Championship the previous year. Zanetti had shown enough to earn a starting place in three of Italy's four games at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying
Zanetti played only half of the eight qualifying matches but, with him, the side won four out of four. In those victories, Italy scored 12 times without conceding a single goal.
Club
Zanetti's first steps in the professional game were with AC Fiorentina, but it was in Serie B that he made the breakthrough, first with AC Venezia and then with Reggiana AC – where he played 31 times in the 1997\/98 campaign to prompt a first move to Internazionale FC.
1998: After playing just once for the Nerazzurri, he was soon on his way to Cagliari Calcio and then AS Roma in August 1999. Initially hampered by injury at the Olimpico stadium, Zanetti found his form during his second season there, making a significant contribution in 27 games to the Giallorossi's first title success in 18 years, though he returned to the San Siro before Roma defended their crown.
2002\/03: After his stint in Rome, he has played a key role at the San Siro even though his performances were not enough to secure the Scudetto in 2002 or 2003, when he played 17 times in Serie A and six times in the UEFA Champions League as Inter reached the last four before losing to city rivals AC Milan.
Did you know?
Zanetti was Italy's least experienced outfield player prior to Korea\/Japan.
